How to Update Galaxy S II GT I9100 with Bezke UltraIcs 4.0 ICS Custom ROM

After waiting for what seemed to be ages for the official Android 4.0 ICS update for the Samsung Galaxy S II we can now assume that there are still a couple of users out there who are not happy with their Galaxy S II after the recent update. If you happen to be one of them, you should read this article with a lot of interest as it presents an easy and as risk free as possible to update your Galaxy S II to a custom firmware that improves on the official Samsung Android 4.0 ICS release. The custom firmware in question here is the Bezke UltraICS  4.0 which not only improves but also adds some fine touches to the official ICS Android 4.0.3 XXLPQ release.
Updating your Galaxy S II with the Bezke UltraICS ROM will void your warranty, so if you still want to keep it you should not follow this guide. The only issue that remains to be covered before we start this guide is the disclaimer, so please read carefully the following words: This software is not our own creation and as such, you cannot hold us responsible for any damage that might occur to your device by following the procedures in this guide. The first part of this tutorial is actually aimed at making sure you can apply this custom ROM. Before proceeding any further you need to have already updated your Samsung Galaxy S II to the official ICS release, which has the firmware codename of XXLPQ. If you are already on the latest firmware be sure to root your device before following this guide.
The next part of this tutorial is going to present the backing up process that should be applied to all your personal data stored on the Galaxy S II. every custom made update applied to an Android running device will result in the permanent deletion of all the personal data stored. With this in mind we will be using some third party apps and procedures to make sure your personal stuff stays intact. Below you will also some find some requirements related to your device and computer, and unless you fancy making a new brick with this procedure, you should follow them:
  • You need to be running a rooted ROM on your Galaxy S II and you also need to have a custom recovery installed.
  • Text messages – Install this app: SMS Backup & Restore
  • Phone Contacts – These can be synced via your Gmail/Google account or by exporting them to the micro SD card
  • Call Log – Install this app: Call Log Backup and Restore
  • Pictures, Music, Videos, Files etc.– Copy to internal memory card
  • Internet & MMS Settings – Backup all the settings from this path “Applications > Settings > Wireless and Network > Mobile Networks > Access Point Names”
  • You need to charge your device to full or to a minimum of 60% to ensure that the phone will not power off during the install process.
  • Enable the USB debugging in your Samsung Galaxy S II. This can be done from the following: Settings > Applications > Development > USB debugging. The USB Debugging option should be ticked.
  • Turn off or disable any anti virus or security software running on your PC because it may have a negative impact on update. If you happen to use an anti virus in your Samsung Galaxy S II be sure to uninstall or disable it as well.
The last part of this guide is the most important one because it shows the steps that you need to take in order to succesfully update your Galaxy S II with the Bezke Ultra ICS Custom ROM. If you still think that this procedure is risky this is your last chance to turn back. If you are committed to doing this you should follow the steps below with maximum attention:
  • The first step will begin with the download of this Bezke Ultra ICS Package to your computer.
  • The next step will involve  copying the downloaded Zip the root of your Samsung’s Galaxy S II inbuilt memory. Be sure not to place the file in any sub folders and to also use the original USB cable for the transfer.
  • The third step involves disconnecting the USB cable and rebooting your device into download mode. You can enter it by pressing the Volume Up key, the Menu Key and the Power ON key simultaneously after the device has been shut down.

After a successful flash, the Samsung Galaxy S II will boot to either the recovery console or to the normal starting phase. If the smart phone does not reboot in the normal way all you have to do is to go back one step in the recovery and select the reboot option from the main menu. The first boot might take a bit longer than usual because the software needs to do some additional tinkering.
In the unlikely case you encounter problems during flashing you should follow the steps above again and re apply the firmware update.  You can also do the same if you encounter the boot loop issue. In any case, you might want to restore an earlier nandroid backup before attempting to redo the steps above.
