Root Android 4.1.2 XXDMF3 for Samsung Galaxy Note 2 N7100

The Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean XXDMF3 OTA Update has been launched recently for the Galaxy Note 2 device. Use this tutorial if you want to learn how to successfully root the smartphone using a small “cwm6″ root utility.
If you will root your device, then you will open up tons of possibilities, such as support for installing custom ROMs based on Android 4.2.x or Android 4.3 and newer builds, flash custom kernels to improve other areas of your device. Also, by rooting the Note 2, you will be able to use applications that require root access so that you’ll enhance your overall Android experience.
First thing that you need to do is to take a look at the preparation guide below:
  • Use this post only for the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 model number N7100.
  • Do not try to root any other phones using the files listed in this post.
  • Install the Samsung USB Drivers on your computer.
    - download the drivers from here.
  • Create backups for all the files that are currently stored on your device.
    - the rooting process shouldn’t delete any files, but in case the phone doesn’t boot into normal mode after root is applied, then you will be forced to apply a ‘factory reset’ from within the Recovery Mode.
  • Enable USB Debugging from Developer Options section under Settings.
  • Disable / Uninstall all antivirus applications from running on your PC.
  • Disable the Samsung KIES software in case you have it installed on your computer.
  • Check the Note 2 battery power levels and make sure that there is at least 50% left before the phone powers off completely.
  • This guide is for advanced Android users. Do not attempt to use this tutorial in case you don’t know what you’re doing, as you might end up bricking it.
  • Read all the info that is listed in this article. Make sure not to skip any steps either.
  • You can’t blame us in case you brick the phone or lose any important data in the process.

How to root Samsung Galaxy Note 2 N7100 on Android 4.1.2 XXDMF3:

  1. Download the root package from here.
    - save the file on your computer.
  2. Download the Odin3 v3.07 from here.
    - this is the application that you will use in order to apply the root files for your phone.
  3. Switch off your device completely.
  4. Boot it into Download Mode.
    - it can be done by pressing and holding Volume Down, Home and Power buttons at the same time.
    - release the button when the Warning screen appears, then press Volume Up to boot Download Mode for Note 2.
  5. Open the Odin executable on your computer.
  6. Connect your Note 2 with your PC now using the USB data cable.
    - wait for ODIN to recognize the smartphone and then continue to the next step.
    - if ODIN doesn’t say that the device was ‘added!!’, then you should try to plug the phone in a different USB port or you can re-install the Samsung USB Drivers.
  7. Now, go to Odin screen and click on PDA.
  8. Browse the PC for the ‘cwm6-root-note2.tar.md5′ file, the one downloaded in step 1. Load it into Odin.
    - make sure that Re-Partition option box is not checked.
    - don’t change any other default Odin settings.
  9. When you’re ready for the root process to begin press the START button.
    - the root will take several minutes to complete.
    - do not press any buttons until all files are flashed.
  10. After the root is complete your phone will reboot and you can unplug it from computer when the Samsung boot animation screen appears.
  11. Wait for the home screen of your Note 2 to appear and then you can start to look for custom ROMs and other similar files to install and improve your Jelly Bean experience.
If ODIN freezes or it doesn’t complete the root, then you should repeat the entire tutorial once again. Make sure that your device meets all the requirements. Also, make sure to ask for more help in comments.
In case Odin says that the installation was complete but, the phone doesn’t boot into normal mode and it gets stuck at the Samsung boot animation or it enters into a boot loop, then you need apply a factory reset for the device using the Stock Recovery Mode. Note that this will delete all the system files, while internal / external sdcards won’t be affected by this process.
Here’s how to apply factory reset for rooted Note 2 device and forcing it to boot into normal Android 4.1.2 XXDMF3 mode:
  • power off the device completely by removing its battery.
  • re-insert the battery and then boot the into Recovery mode: press and hold Volume Up, Home and Power buttons at the same time.
  • release the buttons when the stock Recovery Mode menu appears.
  • select ‘wipe data/ factory reset’. Confirm the process.
  • when the factory reset is complete, select ‘reboot system now’.
  • wait for your device to boot into normal mode.
  • enter your Google Account info and take control over your device once again.
These were all the steps that you had to take in order to successfully root your Galaxy Note 2.
