Root and Remove KNOX for Samsung Galaxy Note 2 on Android 4.3 XXUEMJ5 Jelly Bean

The Android 4.3 XXUEMJ5 was leaked for the Samsung Galaxy Note 2. Since it installs the new KNOX security rooting is not easy to obtain, but there is an XDA developer, dr ketan, who managed to find a way around KNOX and disable it.
Read this entire tutorial and you’ll learn how to successfully obtain root for your Galaxy Note 2 without voiding the warranty. This is a tutorial that it would be best to be applied by advanced users. More info about this release can be found in this XDA thread here.
Now, if you want to successfully root your smartphone, then you should take a look at the preparation guide below:
  • This tutorial works only with the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 model number N7100.
    - do not use this post for any other Android smartphones, as you will end up bricking its firmware.
  • The how-to part of this post consists of two guides, the KNOX Disable one and the ROOT one. Both of them need to be completed in order to achieve root for your device.
  • Factory Reset is not required, but in case the device doesn’t boot in normal mode, then you will be to do a factory reset. More info at the end of the post.
  • Download and install the Samsung USB Drivers for your computer.
    - this will make sure that your device will be recognized by the PC and Odin, the app we’ll use to apply root.
  • Disable any Samsung KIES or antivirus application that might be running on your computer right now.
  • Enable the USB Debugging option from Developer Options menu.
    - if the Developer Options is not shown, then you will need to enable it by opening Settings, go to About Phone and then go to Build Number and tap on it seven times.
  • Create backups for all important files that are currently stored on your phone.
  • Use this post if you’re an advanced user. Note that we cannot be blamed in case you brick your Note 2 or lose any important data.
  • Read all steps and don’t skip any steps that I’ve listed below.
  • Check the Note 2 battery power charge level and make sure that it is over 50%. If the device switches off, then you will be forced to repeat the entire tutorial once again.
  • For any other questions or in case you cannot complete the tutorials, ask for more help in the comments field.

How to flash KNOX Disabled Bootloader for Samsung Galaxy Note 2 N7100:

  1. Download the Odin3 v3.07 from here.
    - extract the contents of Odin and save them in a folder on your desktop screen.
  2. Download the KNOX-Disabled Bootloader from here.
    - the file you downloaded now has to be named “MJ5BLPatch.tar.md5″. Do not extract the file.
  3. Download Wi-Fi Fix file from here.
    -     extract the zip and you’ll get a file named ‘patch.tar.md5′.
  4. Now, power off your smartphone completely.
  5. Boot it into Download Mode:
    - it can be done by pressing Volume Down, Home and Power simultaneously.
    - release the buttons only when the Warning! screen appears and then press Volume Up to confirm the Download Mode boot.
  6. Launch Odin 3.07 on your computer.
  7. Connect your smartphone to your computer using the USB Data Cable.
    - wait for Odin to recognize and add the device.
    - if the phone is not added by Odin, then you will be forced to re-install the Samsung USB Drivers or try to plug the device into a different USB port.
  8. In Odin, click the PDA button then find the ‘MJ5BLPatch.tar.md5′ file and load it into Odin.
  9. Click the START button to begin the flashing process of KNOX-Disable Bootloader file.
  10. When the installation is complete ODIN will say that the process was ‘passed’ and the device will reboot.
  11. Disconnect the phone from PC when the Samsung boot animation screen appears.
  12. Now, the device will boot in normal mode, but the Wi-Fi will not work.
    - Continue to the next step in order to fix the Wi-Fi.
  13. Power off your smartphone now.
  14. Close Odin 3.07.
  15. Boot again the Galaxy Note 2 in Download Mode just like you did in step 5.
  16. Launch Odin 3.07 exe on computer.
  17. Connect the device to your PC and wait for Odin to recognize it.
  18. Click again the PDA button and then load the ‘patch.tar.md5′ file you extracted in step 3.
  19. Click the START button to begin the installation.
  20. When ODIN says ‘PASS’ and the phone reboots, then you can disconnect the device from PC.
  21. Close Odin and then continue to the next part of this post.
Now that you’ve disabled the KNOX Bootloader and the Wi-Fi has been fixed, go to the next tutorial and learn how to apply root for your Note 2.
IMPORTANT: For the next tutorial to work you will first have to install a CWM Recovery. More info can be found in the XDA thread here, that’s where you will find multiple different methods to flash a CWM Recovery on stock Galaxy Note 2. After your flash the CWM Recovery, return to this article in order to learn how to apply root.

How to root Android 4.3 XXUEMJ5 JB on Samsung Galaxy Note 2 N7100:

  1. Download the DrKetan_MultiTool_AdvanceV2.zip file from here.
    - don’t unzip this file.
  2. Connect your smartphone with your computer, then move the zip file on your device’s internal storage.
    - after the file is copied, disconnect the device from PC.
  3. Power off your Galaxy Note 2 now.
  4. Boot it into Recovery Mode.
    - do it by pressing and holding Volume Up, Home and Power all at the same time.
    - release the buttons only when the Recovery Mode menu appears.
  5. Select ‘install zip from sdcard’ option, then ‘choose zip from sdcard’. Find the DrKetan_MultiTool_AdvanceV2 file and load it for installation.
  6. Confirm the install of DrKetan_MultiTool_AdvanceV2.zip and the MultiTool MAIN MENU (AROMA Installer) will appear.
  7. Tap on the ‘Proceed with MultiTool’ option.
  8. Press NEXT on the new screen.
  9. ‘Root Inject’ menu appears now and you should select ‘Root Device’. Click NEXT.
  10. Now, select ‘Inject BusyBox to device’ option and hit the NEXT button to continue.
  11. Next, you will be shown tons of new options and you need to always select the ‘Do Not Change’ option for all screen.
  12. When the root is applied, AROMA Installed will close and you need to reboot your device now from CWM Recovery menu.
  13. Now your Note 2 will boot in normal mode and you need to make sure that you don’t launch SuperSU nor any other app that needs ‘root access’.
  14. Go straight to the Google Play Store and search for SuperSU application.
  15. Update SuperSU and then wait for the process to complete.
  16. That is it, you’ve managed to apply root your device.
Now you can flash any new custom ROMs or any other applications that require root access. Download and install it on your device, then you should launch the app and hit the Verify button to confirm that root access has indeed been achieved for your phone.
